Deborah is a native of San Diego California. Born with a love of music and having a working musician as her father she grew up spending a good deal of time with many local musicians, some who became mentors and offered varying degrees of influence. As an avid music collector Deborah's influences cover many genres including classic country; electric, British and progressive blues; "ole school" rock n roll from the 60 & 70's including R&B, folk, southern and classic rock. After honing her own vocal and interpretational skills she began sitting in on the local San Diego scene and never looked back. In 1983 she moved to LA, and formed the band "Chastity" with a few women including LA based singer songwriter, Holly Light and the ladies booked a 6-month gig in Alaska playing blues, southern and country rock and rockabilly. After returning to the lower 48, Deborah re-acquainted herself with the SD music scene and in 1998 formed and fronted Zero Gravity a classic rock and blues band. With Deborah's leadership and persistence Zero Gravity has managed to "raise above" the challenges to keep the music and band alive in varying configurations. Not an easy task but on the positive side of the evolution and the inevitable changes in the supporting members is the resulting musical growth and experience that helped develop a full spectrum band and Deborah's own unique vocal style. The opportunity to meet and play with so many talented musicians has resulted in a large network of awesome veteran players who continue to interchange and broaden the scope of Zero Gravity allowing the band to work in various arrangements from as small as an acoustic duet to a full 10 piece band.

Deborah has also worked as a supporting band member and guest performer with various local bands. While Deborah’s song selection covers rock, blues, country and jazz all her music is delivered with an edgy, soulful blues influence, creating a style and uniqueness people identify as her own. Beginning in 2006 Deborah began working on her songwriting and has teamed up with and a number of other artists including some as far away as Australia to work on original tunes to better express her experience and influences resulting in some fun and soulful tunes.

Band; Deborah Blake & Zero Gravity

Zero Gravity is a powerhouse group of soul rockin’ musicians who banded together to back one of San Diego’s finest blues rock singers, Deborah Blake. Zero Gravity’s line up varies depending on availability of players and is always a stellar combination of SD veterans with experience in rock, blues, country, and R&B. These dynamic players make-up an unshakable foundation for Ms Blake to put down her powerful and soulful vocals. With their special mix of “flip side” covers and worthy originals they create a musical journey powered by the roots of R&B, rock, blues and country and set in today’s progressive alternative sound. Deborah Blake & Zero Gravity wastes no time; they tell it like it is in their classic no-nonsense rock-n-roll style that leaves the crowd with no-regrets.

“There’s no better way to say it then in a song. Thanks for listening”__Deborah Blake.

Interview by Zachary Cole, BlueSky Music :

What would you say is your style of music? I like to call it Roadhouse Rock. That seems to cover the blues influenced rock and straight up blues colored with the soul of R&B I enjoy playing. My influences range from country to jazz. The type of music I want to cover and aspire to write is timeless music that is simple and honest and stands the test of time.

How would you describe your voice? I would describe my voice as strong, soulful, and rhythmic. People tend to use adjectives like smoky, sultry and soothing when they describe my voice.

Whom do you sound like? People tell me I remind them a lot of Bonnie Raitt and Eva Cassidy. I have also been told I sound a lot like Diana Krall. I must say, I am very complimented and humbled by these comparisons.

What type of venues have you played in? Locally I have played gigs from living rooms and backyard parties to Performing Arts Centers and the Del Mar Fair, of coarse the salty dive bars and small clubs like; The Sidebar, Bailey’s Barbeque, The Water front, KC’s Cocktails, and The Pine Valley House have been a staple over the years. Some larger venues I’ve played include Harrah’s Rincon and Pala casinos, El Cajon Performing Arts Center. Community Events include; Alpine Days, Crest Community fund raiser, La Jolla Farmer’s Market, Christmas for Kids motorcycle run at SD Harley Davidson and gospel venues for Teen Challenge and Set Free Ministries. I make it a goal to support community events whenever possible. I also spent time in Alaska, about a year, but that was eons ago with an all women band. What a blast.

Why do you play music? Quite simply, it’s the essence of who I am. It is my lifeline and it is how I connect with all my friends.
